Village Sign

You  may noticed that the Village Sign is no longer in place, it fell over during the recent windy spell of weather.  The sign was erected in 1977 to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubillee and was repaired in the 90's.  In the last few years the Sign was presented for proffessional repair and maintenance but deemed to be beyond repair.  It was subsequently re-assembled, oiled and re-instated on the oak pole, which has now failed resulting in further damage to the signed when it impacted with the ground.  After some 40 years the ravages of weather and time life coupled with this latest damage mean that a new sign is required.   It is estimated that new carved oak sign will cost between £6000 and £9000 and a cast aluminium sign between £4000 and £6000.  The lead time once an order is placed is likely to be about 1 year, so please don't expect to see the sign back soon.  Fund raising to obtain a replacement is required and to this end the Council is already investigating the possibility of grant aid helping with the cost of a new sign.

Litter pick

Our Autumn litter pick was well supported, 14 pickers collected all the material in the picture below.  Litter pick

The green bags and the clear plastic bags are picked litter and all the other rubbish is fly-tipped material.  The problem of fly-tipping is getting worse.  If you see fly tipping please report it either on the Breckland fly tipping link or to the Parish Clerk

More Fly-tipping in the Village

The above photo is of the latest incidence of fly-tipping in the village.  It looks as though someone has re-fitted a bathroom and couldn't be bothered to dispose of the waste from the re-fit at the tip, instead they felt it was OK to dump the waste on the verge at Church Road, Thompson.  The incident has been reported to Breckland Council using the fly-tipping line and photographs provided.  If you know who dumped this material please tell Breckland Council or if you prefer let the Parish Clerk know - parishclerk@thompsonvillage.org.uk

News about St Martin's Church, Thompson.

A message from Thompson PCC

You may have noticed that scaffolding has been erected at the front and back of the church (photographs below with notification of cancellaion of thr handbell concert).  The Nave is also full of scaffolding, right up to roof height! This signals the beginning of the project to revitalise St Martin's church.

The scaffolding was put in place in November to allow detailed inspection of the fabric of the building, in particular to examine the roof timbers and upper parts of the walls of the Nave from inside and the ends of the roof timbers from outside. Alas, following that inspection, our professional advisors - architect, structural engineer etc - have said that the building should remain closed to the public for the time being.

In order to tell you more about this, what impact it may have on forthcoming events at the church, and to answer any questions you may have, we will hold a public meeting in the Village Hall, starting at 6.30pm on Friday 16th December. The meeting will be kept very short (about half an hour) and it is proposed that the carol singing planned for that evening might start with some singing at the Hall, before moving off around the village. Mince pies, mulled wine and hot chocolate will also be available.

We would very much like to see you there!

Please note that the Church Clean-up day on 10 December 2016 has been cancelled.

Litter pick

A successful litter pick was held around the village and roads leading to Thompson.  Thanks must go to the 14 stalwarts who turned up for the event and managed to collect the litter and fly tipped items shown in the photograph.  Thanks also to Breckland Council who supplied the equipment and collected the rubbish.

Litter pick

Fly tipping is on the increase and we ask that if you see evidence of fly tipped materials or even fly-tipping being carried out, that you report it to Breckland Council using the following link:
