Thompson Parish Council News

Warning issue after Hoax calls – don’t give out your bank details

Breckland Residents are being warned not to give out their bank details to anyone who telephones them claiming to be from Breckland Council calling about bin collections, council tax or any other Council related matter.  The warning comes after a number of reports that households in the district are being contacted by someone claiming to be from the council and fraudulently asking for their bank details.    One resident received a call from somebody claiming to be from the Council informing the resident that they were putting the wrong things in their bin. During the course of the conversation the caller tells the homeowner they must pay a £1,000 fine and asks for their bank details.

If residents are putting the wrong items in their recycle bins, they will be advised of this by the Councils refuse contractors who will place a ticket on the handle of the bin advising them of the correct items to put in, fines are not issued to residents for putting the wrong things in their bins. Another resident received a call from somebody claiming that they could get their Council Tax reduced if they handed over their bank details.

Under no circumstances should any resident hand over their bank details to anybody claiming to be a Council official regarding such matters. If a call is causing concern, residents are urged to ask to phone them back, hang up and check with the authority.  If residents are concerned about a call they have received or would like any further information regarding waste and recycling, Council Tax or any other Council issue please contact Breckland Council on 01362 656878.

Village phone box vandalised

6 panes of glass in our historic phone box were smashed on or about the 24 July.  Such vandalism in our village is rare and it is a great disappointment.  The matter was reported to the police and anybody who has further information to add, please contact our Parish Clerk in confidence.

Thank you to the kind resident who tidied up the glass - such action is a wonderful contrast to the the mindless damage making.
